The Southern Governors Forum on Tuesday recommend restructuring of the Nigeria Federation for the progress of the nation, national dialogue and review of appointments into Federal Government Agencies.

These resolutions were reached at the Southern Governors of Nigeria meeting held at Asaba, Delta State.

A communiqué signed by the 17 Governors reads, “The progress of the nation requires that urgent and bold steps be taken to restructure the Nigerian Federation leading to the evolution of state police, review of revenue allocation formula in favour of the sub-national governments and creation of other institutions which legitimately advance our commitment to and practice of true federalism;

“In view of widespread agitations among our various peoples for greater inclusiveness in existing governance arrangements, the Federal Government should convoke a national dialogue as a matter of urgency;

“Also, there is need to review appointments into Federal Government Agencies (including Security Agencies) to reflect federal character as Nigeria’s overall population is heterogeneous.

The group after expressing very grave concern on security challenges currently plaguing the country, urge President Muhammadu Buhari to address Nigerians on the challenges of insecurity and restore the confidence of the people

Based also on the spate of insecurity in the nation, the forum also resolved to ban open grazing of cattle and cattle movement by foot across Southern Nigeria based on her observation of the incursion of armed herders, criminals and bandits into the three geo-political zones in Nigeria; South-East, South-South and South-West geopolitical zone.

“The incursion of armed herders, criminals and bandits into the Southern part of the country has presented a severe security challenge such that citizens are not able to live their normal lives including leading to a threat to food supply and general security.”

The Governors then recommend alternative and modern livestock management systems to states within the zone that are interested in cattle rearing.
