ENUGU — Leaders in the Southeast geo-political zone has urged their counterparts in the nation to protect Igbos lives in their regions even as they promised to protect other tribes residing within their region;

The leaders made this call on Saturday at the Government House Enugu with governors of the five South Eastern states, members of the National Assembly, Ministers, and Speakers of the State Houses of Assembly, the Clergy and Traditional Rulers in attendance.

“Governors and Ohanaeze Ndigbo are to liaise with indigenes from the northern part of Nigeria and those of other regions and assure citizens of safety in South East and the nation Nigeria at large”.

“We enjoin our security outfit, Ebubeagu to work with security agencies, respect the rights and privileges of all those living in the South East and our visitors”

“We, therefore, request our representatives at the National Assembly to support State Police creation in the ongoing constitutional amendment.”

In a communiqué read by the Ebonyi State Governor and Chairman of South East Governors’ Forum, Engr. David Umahi, the leaders reiterated their commitment to one united Nigeria under a platform of justice, equality of rights, fairness, love, and respect for one another.

They explained, “The meeting was held to articulate our positions and meet with the Presidential team; this is the sequel to the earlier meeting with the Presidential delegation, led by the Minister of Defense, Retired Maj. Gen. Bashir Magashi, on June 11, 2021”.

“We condemn the killing of security agents, burning of strategic infrastructure and killing of civilians both in South East and other regions; security agencies should discharge their duties within the rules of engagement and the law,” the communiqué reads.

“We condemn in totality the activities of violent secessionist groups in the zone and elsewhere and disclaim their credibility to speak for the zone”

“In order to manage the unfortunate situation, we have set up a committee to engage such youths, and allow elders speak on behalf of the zone,” Southeast leaders proclaimed.

Present at the meeting are Enugu State Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi; Abia State Governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu; Deputy Governors of Anambra and Imo states, Dr. Nkem Okeke and Prof. Placid Njoku respectively;

The Senate Minority Leader, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe; Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Dr. Chris Ngige; Minister of State for Mines and Steel Development, Hon. Uchechukwu Ogah; President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Amb. George Obiozor; Former President of the Senate, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim; Former Governor of old Enugu State, Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo; Former Governor of Ebonyi State, Senator Sam Egwu; Former Governor of Imo State, Chief Ikedi Ohakim and Former Military Administrator of old Anambra State, Rear Admiral Allison Madueke.

Others include the Speaker of Enugu State and Ebonyi State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Edward Ubosi and Rt. Hon. Francis Nwifuru respectively; Senator Ike Ekweremad; the Deputy Minority Leader, House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Toby Okechukwu; Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyawu; Archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Onitsha and Metropolitan of Onitsha Ecclesiastical Province, Most Rev. Valerian Maduka Okeke; Archbishop of Enugu Ecclesiastical Province, Most. Rev. Dr. Emmanuel O. Chukwuma; Catholic Bishop of Enugu Diocese, Most Rev. Callistus Onaga;

The Chairman, Enugu State Traditional Rulers’ Council, HRH Igwe Amb. Lawrence Agubuzu, immediate past President General of Ohaneze Ndigbo, Chief Nnia Nwodo, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, amongst others.
