LAGOS — The Lagos State Government in collaboration with International Finance Corporation (IFC), a World Bank Institution has trained environment professionals in its payroll on the Green Building initiative.
A statement signed by Mr. Mukaila Sanusi, Spokesman of the Lagos State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development on Wednesday in Lagos said the training is tagged “Lagos State-IFC Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiency (EDGE).
Sanusi said the workshop was held at the Sheraton Hotels, Ikeja.
He quoted the State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Idris Salako, saying the partnership would develop environment-friendly and sustainable buildings.
Salako said that the partnership would promote greenery and drastically reduce the carbon footprint in the state.
” In clear terms,  the Green Building Initiative is aimed at promoting eco-friendly structures, known as Green Buildings, which use less water, optimize energy efficiency, conserve natural resources, generate fewer wastes and provide healthier spaces for occupants”, he said.
Salako said measures have been put in place to ensure the adoption of the concept by all stakeholders in the built industry in the state.
He urged Town Planners, Architects, Builders, Engineers, and other professionals on the payroll of the state government to take advantage of the workshop and appreciate, promote and facilitate the design and construction of Green Buildings in Lagos State.
The commissioner said that the workshop would go down in history as a major step towards the restoration of the environment and the attainment of a liveable and sustainable building environment for all residents.
Also speaking on the occasion, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, Mrs. Abiola Kosegbe said that a team of EDGE experts who would become Green Building professionals would be raised at the end of the workshop.
Kosegbe added that the collaborative efforts become necessary due to climate change and carbon emissions hence the need for a reduction in the utility bills, carbon dioxide emissions, and pollution.
She added that it will also help in meeting the Sustainable Development Goals.
Mr. Egbike Sunday, an EDGE Expert, said that the role of EDGE experts included: being embedded within the certification process, providing design advice to developers, and fulfilling compliance requirements among others.
Participants at the workshop were drawn from the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development and her agencies.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that EDGE is a green building certification system that gives construction experts the opportunity to adopt the most cost-effective methods to incorporate water and energy-saving options into the construction of houses.

EDGE is an innovation of IFC to make construction faster, easier, and more affordable.
