MAIDUGURI — No fewer than 450 temporary shelters have been destroyed by fire at the Government Girls Secondary School IDP camp in Mafa, Borno state, though no life was lost or injury recorded.

However, food and other valuable goods worth millions were destroyed in the inferno

The head of the Camp, Ahmodu Abatcha, while briefing Local Council Chairman Abatcha Kawu, said the fire broke out at 03:40 pm, and that the community promptly mobilized security agents, who effectively quenched it.

Kawu offered the Council’s help and promised to submit the situation report to a higher authority for prompt intervention.

Baba Ali Modu, a member of the state assembly representing the area, expressed sadness over the tragedy and also expressed concern over the continuous occurrence of fires in IDP camps.

Modu urged the camp management to set up a committee to educate people on effective fire-fighting techniques.
