A group of youths, on Friday, converged at the Abuja office of former President Goodluck Jonathan beseeching him to run for president in the 2023 general elections.
The group carried various placards with inscriptions like: “Run, Goodluck Run”, “Goodluck Jonathan, you are wasting your time, declare now”, “Goodluck we want you back”, “Jonathan, Nigeria wants you to run”.
Arguing that the return of Jonathan remains the panacea to the multifaceted challenges in the country, the leader of the group, Comrade Mayor Samuel said, “We were deceived and brainwashed by those who claimed they could do it in 2015.
“Now, we know better, under Jonathan the minimum wage could buy one or two bags of rice. What do we have today? We are begging President Jonathan to forgive us, we have realized our mistakes, we want him back to complete what he started.”
This is coming hours after the Nigerian Young Professionals in Diaspora, NYPD, a group made up of Nigerians from all over the country who are based in different countries, gave Jonathan one week ultimatum to declare for 2023 Presidential race or risked being sued.
The convener of the group, Arc. Oladipo Akande in a press release made available to newsmen via email from Los Angeles, United States Of America stated that it was imperative for the former helmsman to throw his hat into the ring without further delay.
Meanwhile, reacting to the incessant calls to join the 2023 presidential race, the former president said the political process is ongoing, but that they should “just watch out!”
Speaking after some of his supporters besieged his home in Abuja on Friday, Jonathan said it is too early to make the declaration, noting that the political process is ongoing to ensure the time is right for his declaration.
“You are calling me to come and declare for the next election. I cannot tell you I’m declaring. The political process is ongoing, just watch out,” he said.
The pressure on the ex president to issue a formal declaration for the 2023 presidential race is coming amidst a number of presidential declarations as Nigeria draws closer to its general elections, as well as his silence about a possible interest for the apex seat in Aso Rock.
The West African Pilot News gathered that Goodluck Ebele Jonathan is leading the public opinion poll ahead of the 2023 election.
