EducationNewsEnugu Set For 2nd Own University As NUC Grants License To Establish SUMAS Igbo-Eno

ENUGU —The National Universities Commission (NUC) on Thursday in Abuja presented Strategic documents to the Enugu State Government for the establishment of the State University of Medical and Applied Sciences (SUMAS), Igbo-Eno, in Enugu State.

In a letter dated 16^th of June, 2022, Ref No: NUC/ES/599/VOL. 1/1 and signed by Prof. Abubakar Adamu Rasheed, Executive Secretary NUC, the presentation of Strategic documents and letter of recognition of SUMAS as the 60^th state-owned University and 219^th University in the Nigeria University System was consequent upon the receipt of the letter of intent Ref. GHS/90/X/201 dated 14^th April 2022 from the Enugu State Government.

Prof Abubakar also stated that the recognition of the State University of Medical and Applied Sciences, SUMAS, by the foremost Commission in charge of institutions of higher in Nigeria takes effect from Thursday, 21^st April, 2022.

It further states, “The NUC hereby pledges its total support to the University, we also enjoin His Excellency and the Enugu State Government to take full advantage of the professional and technical advice that the Commission is statutorily required to provide, on the establishment, sustainable funding and operation of the university.”

“By a copy of this letter, the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, JAMB, the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, TETFund, and National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, are being notified of the establishment of the university.”

Recall that the State University of Medical and Applied Sciences (SUMAS), Law, Igbo-Eno, Enugu State, was enacted on April 13, 2022.
