KADUNA — Bashir El-Rufai, a son of Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State, says the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is a ‘very useless’ union that should be scrapped.

He suggested that the union be replaced with educators that have the interest of students at heart.

“ASUU is a very useless union. They should be scrapped & replaced with educators that actually give a damn about students and how that translates to the future of this country,” El-Rufai tweeted.

His tweet came hours after ASUU declared its over six-month-old indefinite.

The National Executive Council (NEC) of the union convened an emergency meeting at the Comrade Festus Iyayi National Secretariat, the University of Abuja on Sunday to review developments since its last resolution that rolled over the nationwide strike action for another four weeks starting from 1 August 2022.

At the meeting, NEC berated the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, for deliberately misinforming the public and reducing the current struggle of ASUU to the payment of withheld salaries, claiming that all other contentions had been resolved.

For the avoidance of doubt, the union stated that the issues that forced the union to embark on the industrial action have not been satisfactorily addressed by the federal government.

Consequently, NEC resolved to transmute the roll-over strike to a ‘comprehensive, total and indefinite strike action’ beginning on Monday, 29 August 2022.
