The North East Development Commission (NEDC) on Monday flagged off the construction of 32km Garkida-Dabna road worth N6.3 billion in Adamawa State.

At the groundbreaking ceremony of the project in Garkida, Managing Director of NEDC, Mohammed Goni Alkali said the project would improve mobility, connect other communities, enhance livelihood and improve security and agricultural productivity.

He said the project would be handled by TRIACTA Nigeria Ltd with a completion period of 12 months.

Alkali also said the commission was constructing the phase one road projects to include 22.5km N13.553 billion Jere-Bowls, 53km Gombe Abba – Kirfi road in Bauchi State at the cost of N11.697 billion and the 54km Mutai – Ngalda road in Yobe at the cost of N12.99 billion.

In a remark, Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, while commending the commission for its continuous intervention in the North East, said, such project will open up socio-economic activities in the region and saluted the courage and foresight of the commission in rebuilding and developing the insurgency ravaged communities in the northeastern parts of Nigeria.

He said the project is essential, as it will serve as an alternative linkage between communities of Gombi and Hong local governments, adding that integrated national development can only be achieved through developing the rural communities.

Represented by his Deputy, Crowther Seth, the Governor lauded the initiative of the NEDC, adding that it will enhance security in the region and urged for more collaborations.

Also speaking, the member representing Gombi-Hong Federal constituency Captain Yusuf Buba commended the commission for a job well done, noting that Garkida-Dabna road if completed will bring development and civilization to the rural dwellers as well as improve agricultural activities and security.

Earlier, the Chairman North East Development Commission General Paul Tarfa (Retd) explained that majority of inhabitants are peasant farmers and entrepreneurs, hence the need for motorable road for easy transportation of goods and services.
