Argentina led France 2-0 at half-time with a 23rd-minute penalty from Lionel Messi and a 36th-minute strike from Angel Di Maria.

However, Kylian Mbappe’s double goals in the 80th and 81st minutes, gave the defending champions hope of lifting the cup once more and secured France in the game.

Messi poked in a goal to put Argentina 3-2 ahead in the 108th minute before Mbappe completed his hat-trick two minutes before the end of extra time.

Argentina defeated France 4-2 in a penalty shoot-out to win the World Cup for the third time. They first won the World Cup in 1978, the second time in 1986 and now in 2022.

At the end of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Mbappe, who scored seven goals in the tournament, claimed the golden boot.

The golden ball went to Messi, who finished second on the TopScorer chart with six goals, as the best player of the tournament.

Argentina’s Emi Martinez took the golden glove for the best goalkeeper while the young player of the tournament is Argentina’s 21-year-old midfielder, Enzo Fernandez.

Nairametrics reports that the winning team is set to earn a total of $81 million which is a total of the $42 million earned as the winner of the prestigious tournament, $17 million for the quarter-finals, $13 million for being in the last 16 of the competition and $9 million for qualifying for the group stage of the competition.

France, on the other hand, is set to earn a total of $69 million which is a total of the $30 million earned as the runner-up of the competition, $17 million for the quarter-finals, $13 million for being in the last 16 of the competition and $9 million for qualifying for the group stage of the competition.

Croatia will earn a total of $66 million which is a total of the $27 million earned for winning the third-place playoff against Morocco, $17 million for the quarter-finals, $13 million for being in the last 16 of the competition and $9 million for qualifying for the group stage of the competition.

Finally, Morocco will earn a total of $64 million which is a total of the $25 million earned for finishing fourth place in the competition following their loss against Croatia in the third-place playoff, $17 million for the quarter-finals, $13 million for being in the last 16 of the competition and $9 million for qualifying for the group stage of the competition.

The grand finale saw a musical performance from Nigeria’s David Adeleke, professionally known as Davido. The singer performed the first of a selection of singles released from the multi-song FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 official soundtrack,  ‘Hayya Hayya (Better Together)’ alongside Trinidad Cardona and Aisha.
