Nigerian singer, Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, has become the first Nigerian artist to be nominated for an Oscar award.

The nominations for the 95th Academy Awards were announced Tuesday morning at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, California, United States.

According to multiple reports, voting for the nominations ended on 17 January, and 9,579 members of the academy were eligible to vote.

The academy said it had ‘record-breaking participation’ for this year’s nominations.

Tems made it on the list of nominations for ‘Best Original Song’ for ‘Lift Me Up’ featured in Marvel’s ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’.

Voting for the 2023 Oscars will run from two to 7 March and the winners will be announced and honoured on Sunday, 12 March at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.

Last year’s Academy Awards ceremony ignited widespread shock after American actor Will Smith, who took home the best actor award for ‘King Richard’, slapped comedian Chris Rock for making a joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.

Smith apologized to the academy and to Rock. He later resigned from the academy, which announced it is prohibiting him from attending the awards show for ten years.
