Hon. Moshood Salvador, the Labour Party (LP) Senatorial candidate for Lagos West in the 2023 general elections has called for the removal from office of the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Lagos State, Mr. Olusegun Agbaje for allegedly working against the interest of South Easterners residents in the state.
Salvador who was the former Lagos State chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) made the call at a meeting with LP Local Government Area chairmen and party members in Lagos on Wednesday.
He said “If the allegations are found to be true, the Lagos State REC has credibility issues and cannot be trusted by the electorate to handle the 2023 polls.
The senatorial candidate noted that it would be uncivilised for anybody to be talking of tribes when people should be talking about a united Nigeria, pointing out that when Nigerians go to the UK, they see themselves as Nigerians but wonder why they segregate back home in the country.
Salvador said, “If we are ready for a better Nigeria we have to zero our minds to such divisive tendencies.
“If the Resident Electoral Commissioner of INEC in Lagos state, Mr. Agbaje is working against the interest of the south easterners as alleged, then he deserves to be removed. We don’t want such an attitude in Lagos,” he said.
He added, “If he can do that then we cannot trust him with our votes in the forthcoming elections. Therefore we have to have him removed if he cannot be credible.”
Speaking about the chances of his party in the coming elections, he said that the LP is prepared to take Nigerians to the promised land.
“They are saying that LP doesn’t have a structure. I was the state chairman of the PDP for many years but because of integrity issues, corruption and no plan for Nigerians, we left the party.
When we saw a better party with a vision, we added our vision to it to move the nation forward.
“The LP has a structure. These are the LGA chairmen seated here. I addressed the ward chairmen a few minutes ago, and that is the structure of a political party. Any other structure is fraudulent.” he said.
He noted that the LP is prepared for the forthcoming elections, pointing that anyone asking if the LP is prepared for the elections is like asking whether Nigerians are prepared for the polls.
“Nigerians are the owners of LP. The youth are the owners of LP. Nigerians are the people working for the LP. The youth constitute 67 per cent of the registered voters who are aged between 18 and 35 years, and they are the drivers of LP. They are the people working hard to have a better tomorrow.
“We have to start today and not compromise for a better tomorrow. We are very much prepared. The LP is prepared to get to the land of promise. I urge Nigerians to vote for LP and wait for their votes to be counted and transmitted into the INEC server.”
Speaking about the hardship being encountered by Nigerians as a result of the naira scarcity, he said, “The government says we are going through the new currency regime so that money bags won’t be able to buy votes, hire thugs to hijack ballot boxes and disrupt the elections.
“The effort of the government is to ensure that our votes count, although we are suffering, we just have to endure the discomfort for at least one month until after the election, the hardship will soon be a thing of the past,” Salvador said.
