…Gov. Makinde unlucky as APC wins his polling unit
Muhammad Inuwa Yahaya, Gombe State Governor, and chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and Northeast Coordinator of Tinubu/Shettima National Campaign Council has failed to deliver his polling unit as Atiku Abubakar’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) won the polling unit with 215 votes against the APC 186 votes.
Releasing the results after the count at the Yahaya Umaru unit 010, the Presiding Officer, Meshach Thomos, disclosed that the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) polled 10 votes while Labour Party polled 4 votes.
The Governor after casting his vote alongside his wife Hajia Asma’u Yahaya at 11:45am commended the voting process which he described as much simpler than the previous process, and urged the Independent National electoral Commission (INEC) to innovate other means of making the process much easier.
He said, “The law enforcement agencies are ensuring a peaceful voting process by living up to their duties.
“So far so good I have not heard or received any complaint aside from the technical issue which has been resolved.
“I made a state broadcast yesterday and I urged people to remain within the bands of the laws and I believe they are willing to comply.
He added, “I appreciate the INEC for its initiative and going forward, I urge it to be more innovative. I pray that we all go through the processes with ease so that at the end of the day we would celebrate with whoever emerges as victorious because we are one,” he added
It has been reported that the polls were generally peaceful in most of the areas visited with few challenges experienced with misplacement of the Bi-modal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS).
It is a setback for the Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde as the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, won at unit 1, Ward 11, Abayomi, Iwo Road, Ibadan North East Local Government Area, where Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, voted.
Tinubu polled 104 votes to beat his closest rival, Peter Obi of Labour Party, who polled 82 votes. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Atiku Abubakar, polled 27 votes at the Governor Makinde polling unit.
Chieftains of Accord, People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, Olooye Adegboyega Adegoke, Dr Kazeem Adesina Abidikugu and Engineer Hakeem Oyedele Alao respectively expressed confidence in the voting process in the state
They expressed satisfaction over the conduct of the electoral officers in their various units during the presidential and National Assembly elections.
They also commended the electorate for coming out en masse in the election held across the 33 local government areas in the state on Saturday.
Speaking with journalists after casting his vote, chieftain of Accord in the state, Chief Adegboyega Adegoke described the exercise as peaceful.
Adegoke, Aare-Onibon Balogun of Ibadanland, who casted his vote in Ibadan South West, Ward 10, Unit 10 at the premises of Oke Ado High School in Ibadan urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to improve in future elections.
“Things have been going on smoothly here. This is ward 10 collation centre, I have been here since 7 am. There are two polling units here. What INEC has done is that they created more polling units.
“The only problem that I saw is that they didn’t have ink pads, people had to go home, get ink pads and give them. But, it has been smooth,” he said.
A chieftain of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Kazeem Abidikugu who voted at Unit 4, Ward 10, Ibadan South East, described the new electoral act as the best for the country.
He said, “My assessment of the election is that people are very much aware that they need to exercise their civil rights. The turnout was very impressive today. I have been voting in the past elections, we didn’t have many people in the past..
“It has been peaceful, we need to recognise the positive impact that the new electoral act has made in making people realise that no one can tamper with election result”.
Chieftain of the APC in the state, Engineer Hakeem Oyedele Alao commended INEC for the introduction of technology into the system.
Alao made this disclosure shortly after he casted his vote at unit 2, ward 5 in Ibadan North local government area, saying INEC has done well.
