Kenya’s First Lady, Rachel Ruto has called for national prayers against homosexuality in the country, saying the family unit was under attack.

Speaking on Sunday, Mrs Ruto said condoning same-sex sexual relations is against the values of the country.

“We should not even try to talk about LGTBQ. This is a conversation we should not even have in our country because accepting it is like throwing our morals into the dustbin,” the First Lady said.

Mrs Ruto’s stance echoes that of her husband, President William Ruto, who last Thursday said that Kenya would not endorse “gayism nor lesbianism”.

“We have laws that govern us here in Kenya. I want to tell you that will not be possible. It can happen in other countries but not here,” said Ruto.

Kenya is among the countries in which consensual same-sex sexual relations remain criminalised.

However, the Supreme Court of Kenya, on Friday, February 24, 2023, granted LGBTQ and intersex rights groups a right of association.

The Supreme Court ruled that refusal to allow the LGBTQ community to register as non-governmental organisations in Kenya would breach their right to association, as provided in the Kenyan constitution.

The President’s and First Lady’s protest is their reaction to the court’s judgement. Some religious leaders in Kenya have backed the President.

Meanwhile, Kenya’s attorney-general said the government will challenge the court’s ruling, insisting that the issue is a matter for public consultations rather than for the courts.
