The face-off between the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, and fuel marketers at the Abuja airport over a 100% increment in apron pass charges has put Airline operators in a dilemma.

It was gathered that fuel marketers had refused to pay, and the agency equally denied fuel vendors from gaining access into the apron area, thereby halting landing and takeoff at the Abuja airport by all aircraft.

It was further learned that the 100% increase in apron charge access will affect ground handlers and other business owners using the apron.

At the time of filing the report, there were congested aircraft in Ramp, forcing airlines to reschedule their departure and had disrupted Passengers’ Easter plans.

Reacting on the matter, the Acting General Manager, of Public Affairs FAAN, Mrs. Faithful Hope-Ivbaze attributed it to the failure of fuel marketers that pass to the apron to renew their fees, noting that their fees had expired since May and were given up till April first to pay up but failed.

“Apron passes are given for one year and within that period they are supposed to renew. The money is not much N200,000, when our facilities break down, they expect us to fix it. Government is not giving us subvention for any of these things, we are an IGR agency, and it is expected that all our facilities be up to date, and we need money to run these things and many of our customers are owing”, she said.

As of now, the fuel marketers are yet to agree to FAAN’s request to renew their fees.
