Following recent attacks on the people of Mangu Local Government and neighbouring communities in Plateau state, President Bola Tinubu has directed security agencies to fish out the masterminds of the cycle of killings in the State.
The attacks have left more than 300 persons dead and others seriously injured, property destroyed and over 18,000 people displaced at different IDP camps within the Local Government Area.
President while expressing sadness and grief over the latest round of violence and killings in Plateau State, condemned in strong terms the killings in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State and parts of Benue State.
He reaffirmed government determination to stamp out all forms of criminalities across the country, said the perpetrators would face full wrath of the law.
The President urged community, religious, traditional rulers, and socio-cultural organizations, the leadership of Arewa Consultative Forum, Jama’atu Nasril Islam, and Christian Association of Nigeria to work together to help foster genuine and long-lasting peace.
President Tinubu also charged the Governments of Plateau and Benue States as well as emergency response agencies to provide support and immediate relief to displaced victims of the conflicts.
Meanwhile, the House of Representatives has urged the National Security Adviser to declare the killings in Plateau State a national emergency.
The call was sequel to a motion of urgent public importance raised by a member from Plateau State, Danchung Baggos on the attacks on Mangu Communities of Mangu/Bokkos Federal Constituency of the state at plenary on Tuesday.
Mr Baggos said most of the victims that sustained various degrees of injuries are currently receiving medical attention at different hospitals within the State.
The lawmaker noted that continuous attacks by the terrorist groups in the communities if not addressed immediately will lead to low farming yield which may worsen the existing food uncertainty in the communities.
The House, after adopting the motion, urged the Inspector General of Police to immediately provide Mobile Police Force Squadron formation in the affected communities to safeguard the lives.
The House also urged the security operatives to provide aerial surveillance so as to destroy camps of terrorists to avoid reoccurrence and allow innocent farmers to return to their farms and ancestral homes.
It also urged the Secretary to the Government of the Federation to direct humanitarian agencies to immediately provide relief materials to the victims within Mangu Local Government Area.
