The Senate has confirmed the appointments of the service chiefs in line with the request from President Bola Tinubu on Thursday asking the Senate to confirm the appointments of the Chief of Defence Staff, and Service Chiefs.

The letter from the President was disclosed at the Plenary by the Senate Leader, Senator Bamidele Opeyemi (APC Ekiti Central).

According to Opeyemi, the request is in confirmation of the provisions of Section 18(1) of the Armed Forces Act, Cap A20 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria (LFN) 2004.

He stated that those to be confirmed are Maj. Gen Garba Musa as Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Major General T.A Lagbaja, Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Rear Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla, Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), and Air Vice Marshal H.B Abubakar, Chief of Air Staff (CAS).

The Service Chiefs who arrived at the National Assembly at 10am, had earlier gone into a closed door session with the lawmakers at 12.42 pm.

The Senate Leader, Senator Bamidele Opeyemi raised a motion to usher in the Service Chiefs, following which the Senate President suspended Order 60 in the Senate Standing Orders 2022 as Amended to enable the Chamber to attend to them.

“That the Senate do consider the request of Mr President and Commander-in -Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on the confirmation of the nomination of Service Chiefs,” Opeyemi said.
