The latest ranking of Nigerian universities by Webometrics pitched the University of Ibadan, UI; University of Lagos, UNILAG; and University of Nigeria, UNN, as the best three universities in Nigeria.
Webometrics is the largest academic ranking of higher education institutions that offers an independent, objective, free, open scientific exercise for providing reliable, multidimensional, updated and useful information about the performance of universities from all over the world
The biannual ranking is based on web content impact, top-cited researchers, and papers published on research and publication platforms online.
According to the current edition, released in July, UI took the first position among Nigerian universities with an excellence rank of 1,157. Globally, it sits at the 1,138th position.
UNILAG and UNN followed suit as second and third, respectively with a world rank of 1,294 and 1,382; and excellent rank of 1,630 and 1,289, respectively.
University of Port Harcourt, UNIPORT, which ranked fourth in Nigeria, ranked 1,403rd globally; and Covenant University, CU, ranked fifth in Nigeria but 1,458th globally.
The last top ten universities in Nigeria include Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU (world rank: 1,544th); Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, LAUTECH (1,939th); Ahmadu Bello University, ABU (1,961st); Federal University of Technology Akure, FUTA (2,080th); and Landmark University, LU (2,229th).
