NewsNigeriaPoliticsTinubu plots to destroy opposition parties with national unity govt

Allegation of a plot to destroy opposition political parties, has been leveled against President Bola Tinubu because of the inclusion of members of the opposition in his government of national unity, without consulting the political parties.

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who spoke with our reporter on condition of anonymity said that the reason the national leadership of PDP wouldn’t want to engage the Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike is because Tinubu is the architect of the problems because of his determination to turn Nigeria into one party state.

He said, “Our policy for now is to ignore Wike and that is the best policy. These problems are part of the procedural issues with Bola Tinubu. When you want to set up a government of national unity, you should have written to the parties.

“You cannot set up a government of national unity behind the parties. You keep destabilising them by taking their members.  It’s systematic of someone who wants democracy to die so that he can reign in one party state.

“I wish those who have lent themselves into that dastardly act to retrace their steps. When the chips are down one political party cannot accommodate all the divergent opinions in the country.

He said, “Wike has not become a God contrary to what people think. A person that has Wike’s disposition, is not someone that you can gag. Once you cannot gag him, are you going to constantly put the party on the state of “He said this, he said that”, thereby making him permanently on the news? I think that going forward it may be good for the party to give their governors what is called a non-disclosure contract to sign. When you’re very high in the political party you are bound to have some information and access to certain things behind the scene that it won’t be expected of you to put it out there in a way that can hurt the party. If you cannot gag him and you say one thing and he responds, do you know the next thing he will say? Thereby causing problems for the party.

“Wike was quoted to have said, “He dares them” I know that some media outlets won’t want to use such provocative terms. Now that he has said that, if I were to respond, in the first instance, it’s a double edged sword. They may think that Atiku Abubakar is the one responding through me, which is not true.

“They may think it is the position of the National Working Committee (NWC), which may not necessarily be true. That situation requires one to be very careful. He said that he has not left the party so it is a complicated issue. You cannot remove him without procedure. If you want to accuse him of anti-party activity, there is a procedure to prove anti-party activity. It’ll almost seem as if you’re singling him out and trying to pretend as if nobody has done what he did.

He added, “Don’t forget that Wike has a history of helping the party in the past. Until the 2023 general elections, Wike was a very valuable support structure for the party. The national executive committee that you talked about was coupled together by the governors of Wike set. If you want Atiku to respond, how can Atiku, who is not an exco member, be engaging and exchanging words with Wike?
