Activities in government establishments and private sectors have been paralyzed as a result of the ongoing warning strike declared by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

The NLC had Friday said it would commence a two-day warning strike over the current hardship caused by the removal of petrol subsidy beginning from Tuesday. The ongoing warning strike has grounded activities in Banks, Hospitals, Courts, and Government offices across the country.

In Adamawa State, government offices at all levels were shut down, while radio stations operated skeletal services to update the public on happenings.

The State Chairman of NLC Adamawa state chapter in an interview, Comrade Emmanuel Fashe described compliance as 100%, calling on people should exercise patience, as the demands of the populace will be met.

In Kaduna state, Banks have complied with the directive by the National Union of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institution Employees (NUBIFIE) to stay off duty for the next two days.

Some customers cut unaware were seen stranded in front of many banks. But in Delta, there was partial compliance in branches of Union, Keystone, and Parallax Banks as customers were secretly attended to by the staff of the banks.

In Jigawa, the State and local government and federal government secretariats, Federal University Dutse was also shut down.

In an interview with the NLC secretary in Jigawa, Abubakar Yushe’u said they took to the streets and enlightened people about the strike.

“We are not against the subsidy removal, rather against the current hardship it has brought, the government has to find a lasting solution to the hardship,” he said.

In Edo, the strike paralyzed activities at the state Secretariats, Central Hospital, courts, and other private and public places.

Speaking with journalists while enforcing compliance with other affiliate union members, NLC state chairman, Comrade Odion Olaye, said the strike is total in the state.

“The two-day warning strike commences today. You can see things for yourself. We are in the state secretariat of the ministry and we have shut it down. State High Court has been shut down, Central Hospital, Coca-cola, Guinness, and 7Up among others.

The NLC said the two days warning strike and if the government did not take any action it would go on indefinite strike.

Minister of Labour, Simon Lalong, had called for a meeting to resolve issues raised by the union, The Trade Union Congress (TUC) attended the meeting, but NLC shunned it and directed affiliate unions, including the National Union of Air Transport Employees, the Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals, the National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers, among others stakeholders in the aviation sector to join the strike.
