A combined rescue operation of Marine Police and local divers is ongoing around the Rugange community of Yola South LGA, Adamawa State.
The rescue operation is to locate about 17 people including children mainly farmers who were traveling in a local canoe to cross Njuwa Lake when the capsized Friday.
According to an eyewitness, the incident happened when the victims were on their way to sell their wares at the weekly Yola town main market when a heavy windstorm blew water into the boat they were traveling which capsized instantly.
According to Faisal Dabo Rugange, the local boat was carrying more than twenty passengers on board and only six were rescued by local divers.
However, the State Coordinator, of Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency, ADSEMA, Mohamed Suleiman confirmed that 5 people have been rescued, 1 died, and 17 bodies are yet to be discovered as of the time of filing this report.
Also, the Adamawa State Police Public Relations Officer SP Suleiman Yahaya Nguroje who confirmed the incident said the command had deployed Marine Police Officers to help in the rescue operation.
He added that so far one woman was rescued, stressing that the actual number of those on board could not be ascertained now until the rescue operation is over.
Recall that sometime in 2023, three children from the Wurodole community near Wuro-chekke in Yola South LGA of Adamawa State drowned in the same Lake Njuwa and their corpses were later recovered the following day.
