NewsNigeriaOver 24 Corpses Recovered, 30 Persons Rescued In Boat Mishap In Niger State

The Niger State Government has confirmed that over 24 corpses mostly women and children have been recovered and 30 persons rescued in a boat mishap that occurred between Jebba and Kainji dam in Gbajibo village of Mokwa Local Government Council of Niger state.

Acting Director General of Niger State Emergency Management Agency NSEMA, Garba Salihu confirmed this in a statement issued to Newsmen in Minna, adding that officials of the agency and that of Mokwa Local Government Council are jointly conducting search rescue and recovery operation at the scene of the incident.

He said over 100 persons are said to be on board the boat, stressing that the victims who were coming from Gbajibo Ekwa and Yankyade communities were on their way to their farms when the unfortunate incident happened.

Meanwhile, Niger State Governor Mohammed Umar Bago has expressed shock over the mishap.

Bago, who spoke in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim, described the incident as terrible and undesirable and warned residents to desist from overcrowding boats.

Bago, while commiserating with the families of the victims directed the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) to provide relief materials to ameliorate the sufferings of the people.

The governor prayed that Allah would comfort the families of the deceased and grant quick recovery to those injured.

The statement read in part: “This is quite a shocking and sorrowful situation to the people of the affected communities and I share in their sorrow. I pray that Allah will grant the deceased Aljannah Firdausi.”
