The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has chosen seven states: Delta, Enugu, Gombe, Jigawa, Niger, Osun, Sokoto and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) for the production of medicines.

Prof. Mohammed Sambo, Director-General of NHIA disclosed this on Thursday in Abuja at the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) with 12 pharmaceutical companies and eight Drugs Management Organizations (DMOs).

He said the states would be pilot phase of the initiative and companies would brand 33 medicines for the organization in the next one month.

Sambo said the initiative of branding NHIA medicines and other health products was to facilitate the supply of “affordable, acceptable, accessible, available and quality medicines and other health products.”

He said the initiative would guarantee medicine security which is geared towards strengthening local pharmaceutical manufacturers.

NHIA’s director-general said it will reduce by 50% the current market price and reduce the cost of medicines, especially intravenous fluids.
