NewsNigeriaPoliticsWomen Affairs Minister seeks accountability from UN agencies on donor funds

The United Nations [UN] may be sued for lack of transparency in utilizing money meant for Nigeria, according to Uju Kennedy-Ohaneye, minister of women’s affairs.

At a televised press conference in Abuja on Monday, Kennedy-Ohaneye hinted that the UN might be spending the funds running into millions sourced from donors for intervention programs to better the lives of Nigerians.

The Minister gave a 30-day ultimatum to the Antonio Guterres-led institution to provide a detailed report of how the aid received on behalf of the Nigerian government has been spent so far.

“I stand here as the Minister of Women Affairs to demand from all the UN the account of all the monies they sourced from donors in Nigeria’s name,” she said.

“We want to see the account of what they did. If you don’t give us this account, at least let Nigerians see what’s going on. Then you [UN] plead with them, apologise to them and change your ways.”

Kennedy-Ohaneye said the report should be submitted to her office between October 16 and November 15 to avoid legal repercussions.

“From the 16th of October to November 15th, if we don’t see these reports published for Nigerians to see, we are heading to court.

“From the 16th of October to November 8, they get our pre-action letters, that is, to prepare them. On the 15th, we are heading to court.”
