NewsNigeriaPoliticsSupreme Court Judgment: Labour Party laments that executive, judiciary have been hijacked

…Says judgment didn’t meet expectations of Nigerians

The Labour Party in reaction to the Supreme Court judgment which affirmed President Bola Tinubu as duly elected president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, says it has accepted the judgment of the apex court but lamented that the executive and the judiciary have been hijacked.

While speaking to journalists during a press conference in Abuja, Julius Abure the national chairman of the Labour Party (LP) noted among other things that the judgment of the apex court didn’t meet the expectations of Nigerians and the Labour Party and also added that the party wouldn’t join hands with the ruling All progressives Congress (APC) in a government of national unity, rather it will play a very strong opposition role.

Abure said, “The very step we will take will lead us to our freedom. I strongly believe that the struggle for a new Nigeria has just begun. The judgment of today (Thursday) is a step towards a new Nigeria.  Obviously we will not rest on our oars until that is achieved. We must continue with the struggle irrespective of the distraction. No amount of people sponsored intimidation can distract us, stop us from expanding our party in terms of membership, ideology. We will continue to struggle for what we believe in until a new Nigeria is possible.

He added, “Today Nigerians are suffering in the midst of plenty. They have taken power and the lives of people have not improved. Today, a dollar exchanges for almost N1400. As we speak today, fuel is sold for almost N800 per litre. People are hungry, children are not in school. Inflation by figures given by a government agency will soon hit over 30%. It is not taking power that matters, it is what you do with power. They have taken over the government yet the standard of living of Nigerians has continued to deteriorate.

“We will stand on the side of Nigerians. Millions of Nigerians supported us, voted for us for which the mandate has been stolen. We will continue to defend them, stand by them come rain, come shine.

“The previous judgments and the one of today (Thursday) didn’t meet the expectations of Nigerians and the expectations of the party, which is why we have come to the conclusion that the two arms of government, the executive and the judiciary have been hijacked.

On the next line of action, he said, “We will not partner with the government.  We are going to play the role of opposition. The soul of democracy is opposition, and part of the reason we have a crisis in our country is because before now we had credible and vibrant opposition political parties. We will be glad to play the role of opposition. I want to challenge the government to be on its feet and be ready,” he said.

Akin Osuntokun, the Director General, Labour Party presidential campaign council, on his part during an interview on Arise TV, lamented that the judiciary finds itself under durex to try to affirm, reconfirm and dismiss all their grounds of appeal. He said that the action is dangerous for the country’s democracy.
