HealthNewsNigeriaUN Describes Worls’s Road Systems as Unsafe, Unsustainable

The Chair of the UN Road Safety Collaboration, Dr Etinne Krug says road systems around the world remain unsafe and unsustainable.

In a statement to commemorate the 2023 World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, Krug said that the road systems remain a car-centric approach to mobility that has left far too many people behind.

Krug who is also the Director, of Social Determinants of Health at the World Health Organization urged countries around the world to rethink mobility while developing road systems, adding that nations need to make walking, cycling, and using public transport safely.

He disclosed that without accelerated action; the Decade of Action’s ambitious 50 percent reduction target will not be achieved, saying WHO will be releasing the fifth global status report on road safety.

Krug advocated for better road safety management, legislation, enforcement, vehicle design, and emergency care systems as a mark to honor those who lost their lives on the world’s roads.

“Another year has passed and more than a million families have been left with senseless grief following a loss due to a road traffic crash.

“We owe this to all who have been needlessly lost on the world’s roads, and we owe it to the families who live without them.

“My thoughts go out to all of you on this World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims; I so much wish that we would not have to commemorate this day”, Krug said.
