Nigerians have expressed their deep concern over the outrageous fee new intakes of Nigerian Law School are expected to pay.
A schedule of fees for the 2023/2024 session making rounds on social media shows that students are to cough up a total of N476,000.
The sum caters for the students’ hostel accommodation, medical services, electricity, security services, yearbook and handbook, and a host of others.
The memo on the revised fee was signed by the director-general of the Nigerian Law School Headquarters in Bwari, Abuja, Professor Isa Hayatu Chiroma.
Nigerians in their numbers have denounced the latest development, citing the economic recession and soaring inflation.
The prices of goods and services in Nigeria have continued to skyrocket since the federal government removed fuel subsidy in May.
The inflation, which stands at 27.33 per cent, is also boosted by the rapid depreciation of the naira against the dollar on both the official and parallel markets due to dollar shortages.
A lawyer, Karimot Olabisi said the new fee is ‘not unjustifiable’.
“N476,000 for law school is a lot. A lot of people were struggling to pay the N296,000, and now an almost double increase?” she said.
“The government can’t say they want to make education better when they are intentionally and systematically excluding students that can not afford this outrageous cost. N476,000 for NLS tuition is not justifiable.”
Another lawyer, Nwulu Alexander is concerned about how students from a poor background would pay the fee.
“Increasing the law School fees is just another thoughtless decision that we’ve seen in our current Nigeria,” he lamented, “How do you expect already struggling parents to meet up?”
An X (formerly, Twitter) user with the handle @simply_iconik shared the same sentiment with Alexander.
His tweet read, “Everything about Nigeria is weird. The minimum wage is 33k but law school students should pay 476k for school fees. Wahala (problem) for who wan study law.”
A student of the school told Pilot News that the fee was jacked up from N295,000.
