The second professor of Mass Communication in Nigeria, Prof. Kate Azuka Omenugha, has resumed as the 4th Vice Chancellor and the 1st female Vice Chancellor of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu University, Igbariam.

Her resumption on Tuesday as Acting Vice Chancellor of the University was marked by a smooth transition from the immediate past Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Greg Nwakoby, in the Vice Chancellor’s conference room at the University.

The handover witnessed by the school management staff members, some professors and the Dean of faculties, the press, and students, was anchored by the University’s Public Relations Officer- PRO, Dr. Harrison Madubueze, and the event commenced with a brief prayer in the office of the Vice Chancellor. Before then, the Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Kate Azuka Omenugha, received a rousing warm welcome into the premises of the University by the students and staff of the school.

In his opening remarks, the outgoing Vice Chancellor, Prof. Greg Nwakoby expressed joy that he was able to bequeath to his successor, what he didn’t get from his predecessor. According to Prof. Nwakoby, his predecessor handed over to him by proxy, through his secretary and that was it. However, he said he is happy that he is handing over to Prof. Omenugha by himself, leaving the university in a far better position than he met it at the time he took over. He also narrated that when he resumed, the first problem that confronted him was the problem of salary payment. “When I came here, the first problem that confronted us was the problem of payment of salaries,” Prof. Nwakoby said. He then charged the university staff members in the event, to give Prof. Omenugha nothing short of their utmost support, reaffirming that he is confident in the new Vice Chancellor’s capability and the fact that she would move the institution forward beyond what he has done.

For Prof. Kate Azuka Omenugha, thanked the Governor, Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo, for finding her worthy of the appointment. She also thanked the outgoing Vice Chancellor, Prof. Greg Nwakoby for his generous cooperation and support throughout, the handover. “I am favoured to take over from a man of your character”, she said. Prof. Omenugha then paid a glowing tribute to her husband, Dr. Omenugha, Ichie Obama. She also thanked her children, especially Dr. Nelson Omenugha, for their support from them. According to the new Vice Chancellor, she started by sending Governor Soludo’s “people’s manifesto” to all members of the university’s management team, on Tuesday morning. The reason, she said, is for it to be internalized by the university’s stakeholders, particularly the part on moral values. In the words of the new VC, “values permeate our whole body.” She further emphasized her commitment to rebuilding the value system of the university, as a critical part of her vision for the institution.

The Acting Vice Chancellor called on all professors and staff of the university, to join hands, bring their ideas and share same with her, for the good of the institution. She also committed to a shared vision of the university which will be jointly formulated and implemented. Similarly, Prof. Omenugha warned that she will not entertain any form of exploitation of students in any way, by anyone.

Both the outgoing Vice Chancellor and the new Vice-Chancellor then proceeded on a facility tour around the University, which was the first outing of Prof. Kate Azuka Omenugha, as the Acting Vice Chancellor of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu University.
