NewsNigeriaPoliticsSpeaker Enugu House Assembly Swears In 2 PDP Members After Court Verdict

Following the Appeal court judgment in favour of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and her candidates representing the Ezeagu and Udenu constituency in the Enugu State House of Assembly, the Speaker Rt. Hon. Uche Ugwu has sworn in Barrister Chima Obieze and Solomon Onah of the 8th Enugu State House Assembly.

Bar. On Wednesday, Obieze and Solomon Onah representing Ezeagu and Udenu constituencies took oath of office replacing Jude Udefuna and Obinna Ijere, both of Labour Party, LP.

The PDP and its candidates, Obieze and Onah had filed a petition against the Labour party and candidates challenging the victory of the LP in the State House of Assembly 2023 general election.

The Appeal Court sitting in Lagos upturned the judgment of the election tribunal which upheld the election of Udefuna and Ijere.

Recall that on September 28th, 2023, the National and State Houses of Assembly Election Petitions Tribunal sitting in Enugu state gave a judgment against the PDP, Obieze, and Onah.

Obieze’s petition against LP and Udefuna was on three grounds: invalid nomination, non-qualification and disregard for the 2022 Electoral Act.

Obieze in ground one of his petition said that Udefuna was, at the date of the election, not qualified to contest the election, in that he did not have the minimum academic qualification “school certificate or its equivalent” as stipulated by the constitution {Section 106 (c)}.

While Udefuna of Ezeagu was disqualified based on lack of qualification, Ijere of Udenu was disqualified for not resigning his appointment at the University of Nigeria Nsukka before contesting the election thus flaunting the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022.

Meanwhile, the Speaker has named Obieze, Chairman of the Committee on Enugu Capital Territory; Solomon Onah, the House Committee Chairman on Trade, Investment and Industry.

The newly sworn-in members took over the leadership of the Committees the ousted members occupied before the Appeal court verdict.
