Google, on Monday, published the top searches on its search engine in 2023: the ‘Year in Search 2023’, a list that captures the trending topics, news and people throughout the year.
For Nigeria, politician Peter Obi, Nollywood actress Moyo Lawal and rapper Oladips topped the most-searched people’s list.
Taking the fourth to tenth spots are Hilda Baci, Mudryk, Mr Ibu, Simon Ekpa, Sam Larry, Anita Brown, and Esther Raphael.
Afrobeats artiste Asake is Nigeria’s most-searched artiste on Google, and his single ‘Lonely At The Top’ topped the search list for trending songs in 2023.
On the artiste’s list, Asake is closely followed by Khaid, Shallipopi, Seyi Vibez, Kizz Daniel, Portable, Spyro, Boy Spyce, Odumodublvck, and Ayra Starr.
Completing the top ten trending songs are ‘Reason’ (Omah Lay), ‘My G’ (Kizz Daniel), ‘Who is Your Guy’ (Spyro featuring Tiwa Savage), ‘Terminator’ (King Promise), ‘Sability’ (Ayra Starr), ‘Asiwaju’ (Ruger), ‘Carry Me Go’ (Khaid featuring Boy Spyce), ‘Ojapiano’ (KCee), and ‘Rich Till I Die’ (Kizz Daniel).
For the news category, the top ten are Mohbad, Nigeria national elections 2023, Hilda Baci, Mr Ibu, Simon Ekpa, ministerial List, Seun Kuti, fuel subsidy, tribunal judgement, and Yemi Cardoso.
Moyo Lawal led the Nollywood actors category. She was followed by Empress Njamah, Mr Ibu, Nancy Isime, Yul Edochie, Bimbo Ademoye, Maurice Sam, Tobi Bakre, Ruth Kadiri, and Olumide Oworu.
The searches for the lyrics of Omah Lay’s ‘Soso’, BNXN’s ‘Gwagwalada’ and Ruger’s ‘Asiwaju’ ranked first, second and third respectively.
Other song lyrics that captured the interest of Nigerians include ‘Lonely At The Top’ (Asake), Won Da Mo (Mavin), Party No Dey Stop (Adekunle Gold featuring Zinoleesky), ‘Sability’ (Ayra Starr), ‘Carry Me Go’ (Khaid featuring Boy Spyce), ‘Tobechukwu’ (Nathaniel Bassey featuring Mercy Chinwo), and ‘Reason’ (Omah Lay).
For the movies category, the top ten are Gangs Of Lagos, Jagun Jagun, Extraction 2, Oppenheimer, Barbie, Fast X, John Wick 4, Blue Beetle, Creed 3, and Heart Of Stone.
The most popular ‘Who is…?’ enquiry by Nigerians include ‘Who is the winner of the 2023 presidential election?’, ‘Who is Mohbad’s wife?’, and ‘Who is the governor of Kano State?’
Others are: ‘Who is Chelsea’s new coach?’, ‘Who is Hilda Baci?’, ‘Who is Sam Larry?’, ‘Who is Simon Ekpa?’, ‘Who is the governor of Osun State?’, ‘Who is Hakimi?’, and ‘Who is the winner of Bbn All Stars 2023?’
‘What is fuel subsidy?’, takes the lead in the ‘What is…?’ search enquiry category. Others on the list include: ‘What is the meaning of idan?’, ‘What is autopsy?’, ‘What is the meaning of idan in Yoruba?’, and ‘What is the cause of Mohbad death?’
Still on the list is ‘What is the meaning of body count?’, ‘What is the national flower of Nigeria?’, ‘What is BVAS?’, ‘What is bell’s palsy?’ and ‘What is cryptic pregnancy?’
Alchemy of Souls, Alchemy of Souls Season 2, Big Brother Titans, Top Boy, Far From Home, Gen V, Wura, Sex Life, and King the Land made the top searches for the video series category.
