NewsNigeriaPoliticsHon. Henry Mbachu calls on Public Officers, Individuals, to rise against Poverty

The honorable member representing Awka South 1 constituency in Anambra State House of Assembly, Hon. Henry Mbachu, has called on elected public officials in Nigeria, and also well-to-do individuals, to collectively rise against poverty. Hon. Mbachu who made this call while distributing grants to petty business owners in the market, observed that the level of lack and deprivation in the society can no longer be ignored or even discussed in passing. According to the Labour Party lawmaker, extreme poverty has now reached a most disturbing level such that even if one intends not to talk about it, it is impossible to deny the intense impact it has on society. “We need to do a reality check. Just look around you, you will see that the level of poverty is so pervasive and it is very disturbing. There is hunger,” Hon. Mbachu said.

For Mbachu, one of the major ways to combat poverty is to identify business people and offer them support in the form of grants, to grow their businesses. For many petty business owners, their business capital is not as much as N10,000 or roughly $10. The implication, Mbachu argued, is that if some people who can afford it are willing to reach out to these petty business owners and possibly double their capital base, it would reflect on their businesses and also sustainably impact on their families.

At least about 200 petty business owners in the popular “first market” and “second market” along the Ifite area of Awka in Anambra State, were supported with the sum of N10,000 as a grant for their businesses, by Hon. Henry Mbachu during his outreach over the weekend.
