The embattled past governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Godwin Emefiele, is out of prison.
Emefiele was reportedly released on Friday, 22 December, after perfecting his bail conditions, including the payment of N300 million.
The ex-CBN Governor has been in detention since 10 June 2023, a day after President Bola Tinubu sacked him as the governor of the CBN.
From the custody of the Department of State Services, DSS, he was transferred to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on 26 October as investigations into hefty corruption allegations against him during his nine-year-old administration (2014-2023) continued.
Justice Hamza Muazu of the Federal Capital Territory High Court, on 22 November, granted Emefiele bail in the sum of N300 million with two sureties in like sum but mandated his continued imprisonment until he meets the bail conditions.
The Court also ordered him to deposit all his travel documents with the registrar of the court and remain within the Abuja Municipal Area Council, AMAC.
He remained in Kuje Correctional Centre, Abuja until after perfecting his bail conditions on Friday even as fresh allegations have been heaped upon him by the special investigator appointed by President Tinubu to probe the activities of the CBN, Jim Obazee.
Obaze accused Emefiele and others of embezzling billions of naira and committing other gross financial offences, including fraudulently manipulating the exchange rate.
Obazee is asking that Emefiele and his cronies be prosecuted for financial offences.
