Due to the unhygienic condition of Yolde Pate Correctional Centre in Yola South local government area of Adamawa State, 51 inmates have been confirmed with scabies disease.

The authority said the affected inmates have been isolated. Scabies is a highly infectious disease transmitted from human to human.

Findings showed that the affected victims were some that were confined in the Criminal Investigation Department, CID, at the state police headquarters.

Yolde-Pate New Medium Security Custodial Centre has a capacity of 800 but currently has 865 inmates. Of the figure, 673 are awaiting trial, out of which 653 are males and 20 females, while 11 are dead row.

However, during a recent visit to the Correctional Centre by the Adamawa State Jail Delivery Committee over one hundred inmates were discharged whose cases bothering criminal conspiracy, culpable homicide, criminal breach of trust, fornication, and among others as part of an effort to decongest the center.

To curtail the spread of the disease among the inmates, the Adamawa state government has donated health kits and some sanitary materials to the Correctional Centre.

Among the items donated include Sulphur ointment Sanitizers, a facemask, hypo, hand wash, cotton wool, medicated soap, hard-duty gloves, ORS, and Calamine Lotion.

Felix Tangwami, State Commissioner for Health, while presenting the items said health issues are critical to human existence, hence the prompt intervention by the government.

Represented by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Barrister Isuwa Misali, the Commissioner explained that the case was reported on Friday and the government intervened the next day an indication that the government is concerned for people’s health.

Tangwami urged the authority of the center to make judicious use of the kits and advocates for personal hygiene by both staff and the inmates to forestall its escalation. Fraternize

Damba Kwinke, the state Epidemiologist at, the Ministry of Health said the first index case was recorded in August 2023, saying findings show that among the front lines of the disease are those confined in the Criminal Investigation Department, CID, at the State Police headquarters.

Kwinke explained that as of now, Yolde-Pate Correctional Centre is the only center with a record case of the disease in the state, and added that the ministry will continue to create awareness and prompt response among other measures aimed at curbing the disease.
