Three inmates escaped from the Ijebu Ode Correctional Center in Ogun State, officials said on Tuesday, adding that the prisoners fled at 3:00 a.m. on Saturday, 23 December.
The inmates reportedly jumped the fence and fled unnoticed by officials on duty.
A statement by the So-Safe Corps’ Ijebu Imushin Area Command identified the fleeing prisoners as Hammed Adeboyejo, convicted of armed robbery and murder; Fatai Taiwo Akande, convicted of murder; and Aliu Oguntona sentenced for sexual offences.
The escapees are still missing, and the prison authorities have begun an intensive search for them, urging citizens to report immediately to the authorities on seeing any of them.
“We have their biometrics and we have contacts of their families. We are working together with other sister agencies and in good time they will be brought back,” Victor Oyeleke, a spokesman for the Nigerian Correctional Service in Ogun assured.
