The Presidency has condemned the recent dreadful attacks on several villages in Plateau State by herders of the Fulani tribe, promising to bring the killers to book.
Armed gangs, locally called “bandits”, overran more than 15 communities across Bokkos and several other LGAs in Nigeria’s Home of Peace and Tourism, and razed down houses on Saturday and Sunday. The death toll in the attack has risen to 195 with scores still missing.
President Tinubu instructed security agencies to “scour every stretch of the zone and apprehend the culprits,” according to a statement from his office on Tuesday.
He also ordered the “immediate mobilisation of relief resources” for the survivors and prompt medical treatment for the wounded.
Vice President Kashim Shettima visited the affected villages on Wednesday to offer his condolences to the State government and people of the State.
Shettima lamented that the ugly incident had shattered the joy of Christmas across the country, and assured that authorities are working around the clock to ensure that the villagers get justice.
“Your blood, your tears, and your cries stain our collective conscience. We are here for you, we are here, resolute in our commitment to ensuring that the perpetrators of these mindless killings face the full force of the law,” Shettima told the people of Plateau.
“We came to power promising to uphold the sanctity of every citizen’s life and now is the time to reassure you that this inter-community violence, which has hijacked the humanity and serenity of this beautiful State over the past decades, will never persist under our watch. We will harness all our resources to bring those responsible to justice; we will not rest until we are able to prevent the recurrence of these heinous acts.”
