Grain sellers and shop owners in Gombi, the administrative headquarters of Gombi local government areas of Adamawa State have lost properties worth millions of naira to fire disasters due to bush burning.
The Secretary of the affected grains market, Mallam Umar Nyalli, said the incident was caused by an unknown smoker who threw a stick of cigarette at a heap of waste materials near the shops which ignited the fire.
“We lost bags of maize, groundnuts, guinea corn, sesame seeds, beans and tamarin fruits to the inferno,” the market scribe said, calling on governments at all levels to come with help,” he said.
According to Nyalli, the businesses of the 19 shop owners had been paralyzed, as nothing could be retrieved of their wares.
The District Head of Gombi, Alhaji Usman Sarki Fada, thanked the state government for consoling the fire disaster victims.
During a separate sympathy visit to the victims of the inferno, Adamawa State Deputy Governor, Kaletapwa Farauta urged them to regard the incidents as an act of God and not to allow their spirits to be dampened by what happened, believing that God would revamp their businesses.
Farauta described the incidents as huge colossal damage and asked relevant authorities to enlighten citizens to shun improper handling of fire within their domain, warning residents to refrain from setting fire to the bush.
“This is the dry season, the harmattan winds are powerful, and people should stop indiscriminate bush burning. We call on our citizens to refrain from bush burning near residential areas and shops,” she said.
Recall that similar fire incidences were recorded within January 2024 in Jimeta, Yola North local government area affecting 10 shops, and less than a week another fire inferno destroyed 7 shops in Numan town, Numan local government.
The Adamawa State Polytechnic, Yola also has its share as a block, housing the Chemistry Laboratory, which was razed down by fire on Thursday 18/1/2024.
These incidents brought 36 shops affected by the inferno in January 2024 alone, but no loss of life in the incidents.
