NewsNigeriaPoliticsCourt Voids 2024 Budget By Edison Ehie-Led Group Of Rivers House Of Assembly

The 2024 budget recently passed by the Edison Ehie-led group of the Rivers State House of Assembly was voided by a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja.

The court presided over by Justice James Omotoso ordered the governor of the State, Siminalayi Fubara to re-present the budget to the legally constituted House of Assembly under the Speaker, Martin Amaewhule.

The court also declared null and void and set aside the redeployment of the Clerk and Deputy Clerk done by the Governor.

Justice Omotoso while delivering judgment quashed the withholding of the House of Assembly fund by the governor because he had no constitutional power to do so.

The Court also restrained Governor Fubara from interferring in the affairs of the House or frustrating its activities under Amaewhule from sitting.

Governor Fubara was ordered to release all monies standing in the credit of the House of Assembly to Martin Amaewhule.

Justice Omotoso ordered the Clerk and the Deputy Clerk to resume office immediately and unhindered, while the Inspector General of Police was ordered to immediately give adequate security to the Speaker and legislators loyal to former Governor Nyesom Wike.

The National Assembly was barred from taking over the Rivers State House of Assembly or accepting or treating any request from Governor Fubara.
