The senator representing Anambra South senatorial zone, Dr. Ifeanyi Ubah, has said that the current system of local government administration in Anambra State is a signpost that the current occupants of the seat of power in Anambra lack practical ideas or are not willing or interested in the common good. Expanding his statement that he would conduct local government election in Anambra State within four months, Sen. Ubah, in a conversation with the West African Pilot News, decried the situation where the government in Anambra State has deliberately killed the local government system. “Under my watch, it will never happen. We will conduct a local government election. Ignite industrialization. Create a conducive environment for the diaspora to participate in what we are doing. As a leader, you must share labour,” Sen. Ubah declared.

In Anambra State, it is now exactly a decade since the last time a local government election was conducted in the state. The current administration led by Prof. Chukwuma Soludo had promised to conduct a local government election in its first six months in office, but it is now two years, and no sign of the election any time soon. In consequence, Anambra State now has a generation of students who have never experienced local government elections. But in neighboring Enugu state, local government election is a regular experience for the people in that state and the state government led by Peter Mbah has perfected plans to conduct local government election later this year 2024.

Supporting his pledge to conduct local government elections, Sen. Ifeanyi Ubah said he is willing to run an inclusive government where people truly matter throughout the governance processes. What this means, he said, is that no government that is interested in what the people want will deliberately choke the local government system like it is in Anambra. He also assured that the local government system would be a viable means of administration under his watch through what he called “competitive governance.” Speaking Ubah said, “We shall have competitive governance in local government administration so that in each local government, the leadership will be competing to perform better than each other. We will set up a structure for each of the local government to deliver two to three kilometers of road in their domain every month,” he said.

Ubah who also spoke on how he intends to set up a formidable governance structure said he would do so within his first six months in office. “Within six months, we shall set up a self-regulatory governance structure. We will do this. What else am I looking for? If you see my word, then, take it. It is my bond. I have a stake in Anambra and we must get it right for our children and the generations to come,” Senator Ifeanyi Ubah assured.
