The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has suspended the re-run election in Enugu South 1 State Constituency and two other states.
In a press release signed by the National Commissioner & Chairman, of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, the suspension of the re-run elections in specific constituencies is due to disruptions, irregularities and abduction of election officials experienced in those polling units.
Out of the 26 states and 8934 polling units involved in the re-run election, acts of thuggery and noncompliance to electoral proceedings were recorded in 3 states and 20 polling units; Enugu, Akwa-Ibom, and Kano state.
In Enugu state, the re-run election for the Enugu South 1 State Constituency in all the eight Polling Units in Uwani-West ward, the original results sheets were not available for inspection by voters before the commencement of polls.
Other constituencies’ election suspended include: Ikono/Ini Federal Constituency, Akwa Ibom State elections in two Polling Units (Village Hall, EdemUrua 003 in Ini LGA and Village Hall Mbiabong Ikot Udo 003 in Ikono LGA) was suspended because all election materials were carted away by hoodlums.
While in Kunchi/Tsanyawa State Constituency, Kano State, the election was suspended in all ten Polling Units in Kunchi LGA due to invasion, vandalization, and disruption of the electoral process by thugs.
Inviting the security officers to investigate the incidents reported, Olumekun said the decision to suspend the election was in accordance with the Electoral Act.
“The decision of the Commission aligns with the provisions of Section 24(3) of the Electoral Act, 2022.”
“Further necessary measures for the affected constituencies will be announced after the Commission’s meeting on Monday.”
