The Nigerian Senate President Godswill Akpabio on Wednesday announced the formation of a 37-member constitution review committee to examine the 1999 constitution.

The committee would be presided over by Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin with one member from each geopolitical zone and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

“The committee expected to be inaugurated next Tuesday will review the laws in the area of artificial intelligence, and state police, among others.

Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives Ben Kalu, who also serves as the Chair of the House Constitution Review Committee disclosed in January during the committee’s first meeting that the House had set December 2025 as the deadline for the conclusion of the ongoing amendment of the 1999 Constitution.

Kalu stated that the committee currently has about 40 bills seeking to amend the constitution.
