The Nigerian government has announced its plans to establish the Kanem Museum to preserve and showcase the cultural heritage of the Kanuri people and the ancient Kanem-Borno Empire.
The Kanem Museum aims to house a unique collection of artifacts and antiques reflecting the historical and cultural identity of the Kanuri people.
The establishment of the Kanem Museum is expected to significantly contribute to Borno State’s economic development by attracting tourists from around the world. This initiative, combined with ongoing efforts to restore peace and security in the region, paints a promising future for Borno and its rich cultural heritage.
Hannatu Musa Musawa, Minister of Art, Culture and the Creative Economy disclosed this during the first Kanem Borno Cultural Summit and Colloquium held in Maiduguri, said the summit will also foster unity among Kanuri-speaking communities across Africa.
The summit with the theme “Toward Achieving Sustainable Development,” brought together stakeholders to cultural preservation and its potential to contribute to economic growth.
Musawa emphasized the museum’s role in preserving Kanuri’s cultural heritage and expressed the hope that people from all over the world would appreciate the ancient culture of the Kanem-Borno Empire.
Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, pledged Borno state government support for the project, highlighting the administration’s commitment to cultural advancement.
The Chief Host of the Summit, Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Abubakar Ibn Umar Garba Al-Amin Elkanemi, acknowledged the presence of representatives from various countries, including Chad, Niger, Cameroon, Central Africa, and Libya.
He stressed the importance of respecting humanity and urged attendees to stop hoarding food items during the economic crisis, as it goes against the culture of the Kanem-Borno Empire.
