The Aso Rock Presidential Villa, the office and residence of the president of Nigeria at Yakubu Gowon Crescent in Asokoro, Abuja, owes an electricity bill debt of N923,873,150, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) said on Monday.
Eighty-five other government ministries, departments, and agencies are also indebted to the electricity company.
Notable among the debtors are the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Power, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Nigeria Police Force, United Nations (UN) Abuja liaison office, National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Managing Director, and World Bank, among others.
The total debt amounts to N47,195,620,266.06.
The Chief of Defence, staff barracks and military formations is the most indebted with N12,001,481,606.
AEDC gave the President of Nigeria, and the ministries, departments, and agencies until Wednesday, February 28 to clear the debt or face power disconnection.
The AEDC published a long list of the debtors in THISDAY newspaper on Monday.
It said it is constrained to make the publication because “our previous attempts to make them honour their obligations have not achieved the desired results.”
“The relevant MDAs are hereby given notice that the AEDC shall, after the expiration of 10 days from the date of this publication, that is, after Wednesday, 28 February 2024, embark on disconnection of our services to them until they discharge their obligations to us by paying their debts,” the company stated.
