A lion in the zoological garden of the Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, in Osun State, attacked and killed a veterinarian, Olabode Olawuyi.
Olawuyi, who had been the school zookeeper for almost a decade, was mauled to death on Monday.
Efforts of other staff members at the scene to rescue the veterinarian were futile.
“The other members of staff who were at the scene of the incident did everything within their power to rescue their boss but the wild cat had already caused severe fatalities,” Abiodun Olarewaju, the public relations officer of the public school, told the press, confirming the incident.
The students union president, Abbas Akinremi, said the attack was due to “human error” as the zookeeper forgot to lock the zoo gate after discharging his duties.
“The incident was not due to any complacent management but to unfortunate human error on the part of the deceased. He forgot to lock the gate after feeding the lion,” Akinremi said.
“Meanwhile, the lion has been killed, and we are not under any apprehension as a result of the incident. The campus is calm, and we are all fine.”
