The Nigeria Police Force has announced the arrest of eight suspects linked to the brutal murder of six police officers in February.
The officers were ambushed and killed on separate missions – one investigating a missing officer case and the other a rescue operation – near the Ohoro Forest in Ughelli North Local Government Area, Delta State.
The killings sparked outrage and public outcry, with calls for swift justice.
According to a statement released on Saturday by the Force Public Relations Officer, Assistant Commissioner of Police, ACP, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the arrests came after intensive investigations by a dedicated police team.
“Following rigorous investigative efforts, five suspects were initially apprehended shortly after the incident, with three more apprehended at different locations,” Adejobi explained.
The statement did not disclose the identities of the suspects or the specific charges they might face. However, it confirmed that they are currently in police custody “assisting with the ongoing investigation.”
He added, “We wish to reiterate that killers of our officers in this extant case, and many others, have murdered peace, and none of them will go unpunished.”
The arrest of these eight suspects marks a crucial step towards closure for the families of the slain officers and offers a sense of progress in the fight against rising violence in the region.
The ongoing investigation is expected to shed more light on the motives behind the killings and potentially lead to further arrests.
