Following a tense closure, the Nigerian Army announced the reopening of Abuja’s popular Banex Plaza on Monday, 27th May 2024.
This comes after the plaza’s closure due to an altercation between soldiers and unidentified individuals on 18th May.
According to a statement by Army Public Relations Director, Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, a high-level meeting with the National Security Advisor’s, NSA, office facilitated the resolution.
Other participants in the meeting include the Principal General Staff Officer to the NSA, the Commissioner of Police FCT, the FCT Director of the Department of State Services, the Leadership and Management of Banex Plaza, a Representative from the Directorate of Abuja Environmental Protection Board, and the National Chairman of the Mobile Phone Traders Association.
The meeting aimed to find those responsible for the attack on personnel of the Nigerian Army and ensure continued security in Abuja.
The key points of the agreement are as follows: the immediate reopening of Banex Plaza, the closure of shop C93, allegedly involved in the incident, the arrest of the shop’s owners who orchestrated the attack, and increased vigilance on the part of the market leaders to report any remaining perpetrators to the authorities.
The reopening comes after over a week of closure, causing inconvenience to traders and shoppers. While the plaza reopens, the search for those involved in the altercation continues.
