The Nigerian government on Wednesday withdrew terrorism charges against Bello Bodejo, the president of Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, a Fulani cattle herders association.
Bodejo was arrested in January 2024 after he launched a vigilante group in Nasarawa State to assist security agencies in combatting crime and banditry in the State.
He faced three counts of terrorism-related offences, including establishing an ethnic militia and activities threatening national security. He had been in detention since his arrest.
The Attorney General’s office informed the Federal High Court in Abuja of the decision to withdraw the charges, citing the “interest of justice” as the reason. No further explanation was provided.
“The honourable Attorney-General of the Federation has instructed me to withdraw this charge against the defendant in the interest of justice. That is our humble application, my lord,” Aderonke Imana, counsel representing the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation, AGF, told the court presided by Justice Inyang Ekwo. The court obliged the appeal.
Bodejo’s lawyer welcomed the decision and expressed gratitude to the AGF for his “magnanimous gesture.”
