The Federal Government has inaugurated the OXFAM Nigeria Climate Justice Youth Ambassadors as part of efforts to combat climate challenges nationwide.

This initiative aims to encourage the Federal Ministry of Environment to adopt environmental and climate change education as a priority, aiming to foster a climate-conscious generation and establish environment clubs in Nigerian schools nationwide.

Inaugurating the group in Abuja, to mark the World Environment Day, Minister of Environment Mallam Balarabe Lawal urged the ambassadors to remain steadfast in their mission.

He reiterated the government’s unwavering commitment to sustainability based on this year’s theme, “Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience.”

In his remark, Kenneth Akpan, Project Coordinator for Climate Justice at OXFAM Nigeria, disclosed that over 1,000 ambassadors have been unveiled nationwide to lend their support to the government’s initiatives to address the climate crisis across all levels of governance.

“The origin of the Climate Justice Youth Ambassadors initiative which stems from the AACI project is a pivotal role of youth in tackling the country’s climate challenges and supporting governmental efforts at various levels,” Akpan said.

Also speaking, Aliyu Sadiq, Acting Coordinator of the Climate Justice Youth Ambassadors Network said the ambassadors would raise environmental awareness and mitigate impacts within their communities.

The high point of the event is the Environment Day School quiz competition, with Junior Secondary School Jabi emerging as the winner.
