The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in its 2024 report indicated that millions of parents and families are facing food poverty with the challenges of providing nutritious and diverse foods for young children to reach their full potential in 62 countries.
The affected countries are Nigeria, Ghana, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, China, Côte d’Ivoire, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Myanmar, Niger, Pakistan, the Philippines, Somalia, South Africa, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, and Yemen.
The report describes child food poverty as the inability to access and consume a nutritious and diverse diet in early childhood.
The report highlighted some factors that contribute to child food poverty to include rising food prices, unhealthy foods, harmful food marketing strategies, and poor child-feeding practices.
It states that “One in four children (27%) is living in severe child food poverty in early childhood, affecting 181 million children under five years of age.”
UNICEF urges governments and partners to end severe child food poverty by improving children’s access to diverse and nutritious diets.
