Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia has declared a 24-hour curfew on Ukum Local Government Area following protests that broke out in Sankera, the Ukum LGA headquarters of Benue State in the early hours of Wednesday.

The protest was connected to killings of 11 people by armed outlaws.
The protesters were alleged to have torched the council’s secretariat and vowed to burn it down as they laid dead bodies of victims on the parking lot of the Council Chairman, Victor Iorzaa.

According to a statement on Wednesday by the Technical Advisor to the Governor on Media, Publicity and Strategic Communication, Solomon Iorpev the a 24-hour curfew takes effect from 3pm on Wednesday.

He said the curfew was imposed because of the grave security situation in the region that has led to the wanton destruction of property leading to instability in the area.

Part of the statement reads: “The governor, through his Deputy, Dr Sam Ode, has directed that beginning today, 3rd July 2024, a curfew be imposed on Ukum Local Government and environs beginning from 3pm to 3pm of tomorrow 4th July 2024.

“The curfew shall be observed from 6pm to 6am beginning from tomorrow 4th of July 2024 until further notice.”
