President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration has given the Nigerian signatory to the Samoa Agreement. Nigeria’s signatory was secured last weekend, followed by the country’s Statement of Declaration. This event took place at the secretariat of the Organization of African, Caribbean and Pacific States – OACPS, in Brussels, Belgium. For Nigeria and Africa in general, the Samoa Agreement covers the following areas of cooperation; peace and security, human rights, natural resource management, economic growth and development, environment, democracy and governance, as well as migration. This agreement is a product of negotiations between the European Union – EU and OACPS, since 2018.
However, while all 27 EU member states have signed the agreement, only about 47 out of the 79 OACPS members have endorsed the agreement. With 103 articles, which provide further specific details in terms of regional peculiarity, the agreement covers Africa and EU, the and EU, and Pacific and EU regional protocols.
Commenting on this development, the Ministry of Information in its press release, affirmed that the Samoa Agreement is in Nigeria’s best interest. “The Samoa Agreement is a vital legal framework for cooperation between OACPS and the European Union, to promote sustainable development, fight climate change, and its effects, generate investment opportunities and foster collaboration among OACPS Member States at the international stage”, the statement from the Ministry of Information, signed by Mohammed Idris reads in part.
Similarly, the Federal Ministry of Information assured Nigerians that the agreement was signed after due diligence and after careful consideration of the agreement’s provisions by various federal ministries. “Nigeria signed the Agreement on Friday…this was done after the extensive reviews and consultations by the Interministerial Committee, convened by the Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Federal Ministry of Justice,” Ministry of Information says. The statement also assures of no breach of any Nigerian law by the agreement.
