EconomyNewsNigeriaTrucks of Rice Delivered to States as Tinubu’s Government Battles Food Crisis

To alleviate the impact of rising food prices, the Nigerian government has announced the distribution of trucks of rice to all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja.
This comes as the National Bureau of Statistics reported a record-breaking inflation rate of 34.19 per cent in June 2024, with food prices experiencing a particularly sharp increase.
Each State and the FCT received 20 trucks, although previous reports suggested each state would receive five.
Each truck contains 1,200 25 kg bags of rice, according to Mohammed Idris, Minister of Information and National Orientation. He did not state when the delivery took place.
“This is a first step and the Federal Government will continue to support all the sub-nationals so that the hardship being experienced by most Nigerians, in terms of shortage of food supply, is breached,” Idris stated.
“It is expected that the state governors will go ahead to distribute this food item to the most vulnerable so that the hardship, as I said, being experienced will be brought down significantly.”
This intervention coincides with the government’s approval of a separate N5 billion grant to each state specifically for the procurement of additional grains like maize.
